Think you’ve got what it takes to rule the backyard smoker? Round up your crew, fire up the BBQ, and throw your hat in the ring for the Smokin’ Barrel Fest Amateur Comp — a fun, flavour-packed showdown for local legends, first-timers, and weekend pitmasters ready to have a crack.

Built for backyard cooks and BBQ lovers, this comp is all about good food, good people, and smoky bragging rights. It’s relaxed in feel, big on flavour, and made for teams who want to compete, learn a few tricks, and be part of one hell of a weekend.

  • Bump-In: Saturday 26 September

  • Location: Chapman Valley, Western Australia

  • Entry Fee: $175 per team

  • Camping Included: Saturday and Sunday night

  • Pack Up: Monday morning

WHO IT’S FOR

Open to non-professional BBQ enthusiasts, this comp is perfect for backyard cooks who want to test themselves in a fun, friendly setting. Burnt Barrel’s current festival messaging positions the event as community-focused and welcoming, so this section should feel inviting rather than overly formal.

Whether it’s your first comp or you’ve been feeding mates from the smoker for years, this is your chance to get amongst it, learn on the ground, and chase a bit of Backyard Pit Boss glory.

COMP STYLE

This is a relaxed KCBS-inspired backyard comp with the focus on fun, fairness, and bloody good BBQ. It’s built to be approachable for first-time teams while still giving everyone a proper crack at competition cooking.

  • Overall Champion — $300 +Trophy

  • Reserve Champion - $200

  • Wings Winner — $200

  • Ribs Winner — $200

JUDGING

Entries will be judged using KCBS-inspired guidelines, with attention given to:

  • Taste

  • Tenderness

  • Appearance

WHAT TO BRING

  • BBQ or smoker

  • Cooking utensils

  • Cutting boards

  • Meat thermometers

  • Turn-in containers

  • Personal shade or shelter

  • Camping gear if staying on site

  • Your own meat

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Toilets and basic facilities provided

  • No power provided on site — BYO generator if needed

  • Alcohol restrictions apply

  • Fire extinguisher recommended

  • Teams must follow food safety practices

  • Respect event staff, fellow competitors, and festival grounds
